History of piñatas

Today piñatas are traditional for birthday parties and other celebrations, and come in many shapes and designs. Although the traditional game is to break open the piñata with a stick, an alternate game can be played with a pull-string piñata. Ribbons are threaded through the bottom of the piñata. Sometimes only one string opens the piñata, sometimes several strings open compartments filled with small amounts of prizes. Another version lets very young children each hold a string and pull at the same time.
