Zero Snack Time Activity

Adapted from the Mathematics TEKS Toolkit site

For snack time, put out several bowls of snacks such as raisins, crackers, apple slices, and one particularly attractive snack such as M&Ms or Oreo cookies. Behind each bowl place a stand-up sheet with a number, to indicate the number of snacks they can take from that bowl. Place the number zero behing the tempting snack.

Have the children line up with their plates and go down the line taking the indicated amounts. Watch their reactions as they come to the zero selection! Of course, they will immediately call "no fair" -- wait until you have a fairly large concerned group, then don't give in until you have a lively discussion about the concept of zero.

Questions to ask:

How many Oreos do you get to take today?
How do you know?
What does zero mean?
How would the sign be different if you got to take some cookies?
If you made a better sign, what would you put on it?
Would you like to trade this sign for another sign on another snack item?
Would you like to put the zero up tomorrow instead of today? (If agreed, follow up with a more enticing zero snack the next day)
