The story of Hotel Infinity has been told many ways. Here is Hotel Ad Infinitum, written by B. David Stacy, from an idea belonging to the German mathematician David Hilbert. John Wallis, an English mathematician, proposed that the symbol be used to indicate infinity. But it was Georg Cantor who defined the mathematics of infinity. A question to think about: What is the biggest number? In 1938, American mathematician Edward Kasner asked his 9-year old nephew Milton Sirotta to make up a name for the huge number written as the number one followed by one hundred zeros. After thinking a moment, Milton decided to name it "googol." Later a "googolplex" was defined as writing the number one followed by a googol of zeros. You can see what these numbers look like here. |
